Invader Zim is the star of the show. We learn in The Nightmare Begins that he really isn't an invader at all after his "successes" in Operation Impending Doom I, but Zim is incorrigible and goads the Almighty Tallest into giving him a new mission…which ends up being to conquer the Earth. He comes up with a multitude of brilliant, creative and entirely misguided methods to speed the destruction of the humans, but he is usually thwarted by Dib, GIR or by the plan itself.
Zim is incredibly expressive for a cartoon character and that really goes far to enhance the viewing experience.
Billy West actually voiced Zim in the pilot episode.
