Earth's last and greatest hope (or so he'll tell you), Dib is a young paranormal investigator. He has dedicated his entire young life to investigating aliens, chupucabras at the mall, bigfoot, Chickenfoot and many other mysteries that remain under the radar of normal people. Dib is one of the main characters of the show and as such he figures prominently in nearly every episode.
Dib has access to many high-tech scientific devices since his father is Professor Membrane, the greatest scientist that the world has ever known. Dib's sister Gaz is a very focused girl - usually focused on Vampire Piggy Hunter on her Game Slave or Game Slave II. She frequently threatens Dib and he seems to be (rightly!) afraid of her.
I have seen on several other sites that Dib is actually Jhonen's favorite character and he frequently implored the writers to not make Dib look stupid or foolish (I've seen that Jhonen's favorite episode is reputed to be Mortos der Soulstealer which really stars Dib and Mortos and features Zim and GIR in secondary roles - but I've read on another site that Jhonen didn't even like this episode so who knows).
